Interpretation

Simultaneous interpretation is the most faceless and impersonal type of interpreting. More often than not, it requires the interpreter to be “behind the scenes”, often in a soundproof booth or room, and often with the aid of special interpreting equipment, headphones and microphones. It is a highly specialised area of translation which demands complete and accurate translation, orally and at the same pace of speech as the speaker, in fractions of a second.
Consecutive Interpreting is where the interpreter stands beside the speaker and interprets in sections, consecutively. Whilst the speaker is talking, the interpreter may take notes, and then when the speaker pauses, the interpreter re-produce what has been said into the target language.
Chuchotage Interpreting is also called ‘whispering’ where no interpreting equipment is required as the interpreter, who is positioned right next to the listener, simply whispers to the listener precisely what the speaker is saying. It permits significant flexibility since no interpreting booth is required. It is for instance ideal for guided plant tours.
